Life before Reiki felt like a constant battle to survive. Every day was a cycle of checking the clock, monitoring my bank account, and ignoring the warning signs my body and mind were sending. The corporate world I worked in encouraged sitting for hours, leaving little room for movement or self-care. Like many, I neglected my health and well-being, caught in endless loops of worry and stress.
The Weight of Survival
At my heaviest, I was morbidly obese and struggling with fibroids and ovarian cysts. I tried countless diets and medications, but nothing seemed to work. Birth control pills brought migraines and other side effects that only added to my health problems. It felt like a never-ending cycle of treatments that failed to bring relief.
The pandemic made things feel even worse. I lost friends, my job, my apartment, and eventually my spouse. At the time, it seemed like everything was falling apart. Looking back, I realize these losses were part of a natural process—a clearing away of what no longer served me as I began to choose better for myself.
Understanding Survival Mode
When we are stuck in survival mode, our brain focuses only on immediate threats. This means it often ignores important signals like hunger, rest, or the need to use the bathroom. Ignoring these cues adds stress to the body, which stays in a constant state of alert. Healing becomes impossible until the body can relax and enter a state of rest and restoration.
This insight was a turning point for me. I learned that true healing requires more than just treating symptoms. It demands a shift in how we care for ourselves and listen to our bodies.

Discovering Reiki and Its Impact
In late 2019, I decided to take control of my health and well-being. I scheduled Reiki training with Julie Russell at Rio Valley Verde. Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice that supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It helped me reconnect with my body and mind in ways I hadn’t experienced before.
Reiki sessions became a space where I could truly rest and restore. Over time, I noticed improvements in my physical health and emotional resilience. The constant worry loops began to fade, replaced by a growing sense of calm and clarity.
Practical Lessons from My Journey
Listen to your body’s signals: Hunger, rest, and other urges are important messages, not inconveniences to ignore.
Create space for rest: Healing happens when the body is relaxed and not under constant stress.
Choose self-care daily: Small actions like mindful breathing, gentle movement, or Reiki can build resilience.
Accept change as part of growth: Losses and challenges can clear the way for better choices and healing.
Seek support when needed: Whether through Reiki, therapy, or community, healing is not a solo journey.
An Invitation to Explore Reiki
If you feel stuck in survival mode or overwhelmed by stress, Reiki might offer a gentle path forward. It doesn’t require any special skills or beliefs—just an openness to healing energy and self-care.
For those curious or with limited resources, I offer community-service Reiki sessions. This is a way to experience Reiki’s benefits without financial pressure. Healing should be accessible to everyone, no matter where they are in their journey.
Moving Beyond Survival
My story is not defined by the hardships I faced but by the choices I made despite them. Healing is possible when we stop merely surviving and start living with intention and care.
If you are ready to explore a new way of healing, consider Reiki as a step toward restoring balance in your life. It helped me find peace amid chaos, and it may do the same for you.
